A Clinical Study of Herniations of Lumbar Intervertebral Disc


Abstract
Since 1933, Mixter & Barr reported the modern era of definition for surgical treatment of herniated intervertebral disc at the annual meeting of the New England Surgical Society, the disc disease was recognized as the most common cause of nerve root compression in the lumbar spine. The auther reviewed 148 cases of herniated lumbar intervertebral disc who has been admitted and treated at Sacred Heart Hospital, Chung Ang University from 1969 to 1972. .
The results were as follows:
1) The percentage of sex incidence was 68.2% in male and 31.8% in female, and of the site incidence 70.2% between L4-5 vertebrae, 21.7% between L5-Sl vertebrae and 8.9% in other sites.
2) The results of operation revealed, 90.7% were considered good to excellent, 7% were improved and the remaining was not changed or poor.
3) There was 3% of negative exploratin, of which we couldn¢¥t found out any other pathological condition including tumor, abnormal vascular channel, hypertrophy of ligamentum flavum and inflammatory process.
4) Most of the operated cases was carried out partial hemilaminectomy under general anesthesia with lateral position which procedure was easy and simple for auther.
